Charles Richard Turner
Charles Richard Turner, 81, of Leavenworth, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Cushing Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept.1, 1926, in Hamilton, Ill., the son of Edward Jesse and Beulah May (White) Turner.
Charles attended Hamilton High School where he played football and was captain of the team. He graduated in 1944. He entered the United States Navy in 1944, and served for two years. Charles graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill. He then became a stenographer for the travel agent with Burlington Rail Road in Leavenworth. After working for 10 years with the rail road he became the business manager for Goodyear Roofing in Leavenworth. In 1961, he became Leavenworth County Clerk, a position he held for 16 years. In 1976, he accepted a job as sales representative for Lockwood Printing Co., in Atchison Kan. In this position he traveled extensively, selling school and election supplies. He retired in 1991
On Sept. 25, 1948, he married Marveta Mowry at the First Christian Church in Leavenworth. She survives at the home. He is also survived by his children, Deborah Sue (Ricky Ray) Sherretts of Leavenworth, Gregory Wayne (Lynn) Turner of Easton, Jeffrey Dean (Teresa) Turner of Leavenworth, and Cheryl Ann (Ernest) Allen of Easton; a brother, Harold Edward (Kay) Turner; his grandchildren, Rachel Turner, Kim Jackson, Adam Turner, Margeruite Turner, Marcus Sherretts, Amanda Sherretts, Joshua Allen and Jacob Allen; and four great-grandchildren.
Charles was very active in the First Christian Church for 40 years, where he served as elder, deacon, sang in the choir, and served on the building committee for the new church. In 1994, he joined the First United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Leavenworth Lions club for many years and had served as past president. He has been a member of the Easton Lions club for the last 30 years where he served as past secretary, and treasurer. In 2003 he received the Melvin Jones Award. He also belonged to the Eagles, American Legion, and had been a Mason. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, fishing, camping and traveling. He was an avid bird watcher.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church. Ruth May Reeves, 91, of Leavenworth, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Homestead Assisted Living in Leavenworth. She was born July 10, 1916, in Leavenworth county near Bonner Springs, Kan., the daughter of Albert Bruce and Ruth Mary (Smith) Craddock.
She is survived by her three daughters, Donna J. (Elmer) Bailey of Leavenworth, Nancy L. (Hale) Kiser of Leavenworth, and Judith K. (John) Benn of Bella Vista, Ark.; 11 grandchildren, Jessie Ledet of Buras, La., Blair Ledet of Leavenworth, Samuel H. (Beau) Kiser IV of San Antonio, Texas, Kent Kiser of Bothell, Wash., Laurie Milcherska of Sedona, Ariz., Lynne Rockers of Clive, Iowa, Ellen Wimsatt of Potomac, Md., Tom Swaney of Kingman, Kan., Pam Doering of Omaha, Neb., Rhonda Webb of Omaha, Neb., and Mark Brown of Omaha, Neb.; and 16 great-grandchildren.
On May 15, 1948, she married Larry Reeves in Bentonville, Ark. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1990. She was also preceded in death by three grandchildren and a step-daughter, Patricia Cole.
Ruth worked as chief deputy in the Platte County Collector’s office for 18 years. She was elected to serve as Platte County Collector from 1971 to 1975. She retired in 1975. In 1975, Ruth joined the Smithville Hospital auxiliary and began volunteering. In 1997, she was awarded the Platte County Volunteer of the year award for more than 8000 hours of service at the Smithville Hospital.
She was a 42 year member of the Platte City United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 35 years. Ruth moved to Leavenworth in 1998, and joined the First Christian Church.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the First Christian Church at 6th and Seneca in Leavenworth. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Lynn Dickson presiding. She was cremated. The family requests no flowers. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, Homestead Assisted Living, or Kansas City Hospice.
Loyde William Gillespie
Loyde William Gillespie, 58, of Leavenworth, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Cushing Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 25, 1950, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of John Edwin and Edna Mae (Davis) Gillespie.
Loyde is survived by his sons, Phillip (Jessica) Gillespie and Jeremy (Lisa Real) Gillespie; his granddaughters, Gwendolyn Gillespie and Danielle Gillespie; three sisters, Alta (Jess) Gomez, Dorothy (Lee) Gonzales, and Margie Gillespie; three brothers, John Edwin Gillespie Jr., George Gillespie and Terry (Lisa) Gillespie; and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Loyde Gillespie Jr.
Loyde loved his granddaughters. He enjoyed playing poker and participating in dart tournaments.

Eleanor Irene Wagner
Mrs. Eleanor Irene Wagner, 79, of Easton, died unexpectedly at the University of Kansas Hospital on Sunday, April 27, 2008. Eleanor was born June 6, 1928, in Wellsville, Kan., the daughter of Edna (Shawen) and Earl Doty. She attended grade school at several one-room schoolhouses in the Jefferson County area. She graduated from Rock Creek High School.
Eleanor married Eugene (Bud) Wagner at St. Lawrence Catholic Church on April 12, 1950. They were married for 31 years until Bud died of cancer in 1981. They lived on the family farm in rural Easton all of their lives where she worked as a homemaker and farmer’s wife. She and Bud spent many wonderful years together and acquired the hobby of collecting McCormick and Beam Decanters for several years. After her husband’s death, she worked for approximately 12 years at Country Care Nursing Home in Easton as a cook for the facility. She continued to raise Charolais cattle on the farm and remained very active on the farm, checking cattle and calves, and helping her son, Jim continue to run the farm operation. She was an avid KU basketball fan, and although she was sick, she watched them win the Final Four this spring. She also enjoyed gardening, checking fences while walking on the farm, and spending holidays with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Eleanor was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and Altar Society for 58 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Harold Doty, Alvin Doty, and Floyd Doty; her infant siblings, Louise and twins, Irma and Irvin; her son-in-law, Archie Griffee; her brother-in-law, Clarence Wagner; and her sisters-in-law, Cecilia Beying, Betty Doty and Rhinetta Doty.
Eleanor is survived by her daughters, Susan Griffee, and Peggy (Randy) Clark; her sons, Jim (Rheta) Wagner, all of Easton, and Kenny (Teresa) Wagner of Florida; her grandchildren, Michael (Wendi) Jones and Tricia (Les) Jones-Molt of Atchison, Nick (Wendy) Clark, and Sara (Justin) Griffee-Green of Easton, Rachel Wagner and Paul Wagner of Lawrence, and Ashley (Robbie) Wagner-Mullins, and Brandy (Josh) Wagner-Nikes of Leavenworth; her great-grandchildren, Kaelan, Kirby, and Kamelia Jones, and Michele and Adison Molt of Atchison, Ronnie and Tristan Clark, and Austin Green of Easton; her siblings, Leland Doty and Evelyn Doty-Wagner; and a former daughter-in-law Marylee Wagner all of Easton.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2008, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Easton with Rev. Keith Lunsford as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery. The family request that memorials in Eleanor’s memory be given to St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
Violet C. Bailey
Violet C. Bailey, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, 91, of Kansas City, Kan., formerly of Leavenworth, died Friday, April 18, 2008, at Kindred Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., from complications of pneumonia. She was born Nov. 7, 1916, in Columbia, Mo., the daughter of David F. and Alcesta (Campbell) Conley.
Violet is survived by her son, Roger C. (Mary A.) Turner of Bonner Springs; four grandchildren, Todd (Amy) Turner, Lisa Bickle, Kathy (Alex) Poulter, and Kelly Gillespie; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Sara, Connor, Lindsey, Katelyn, Austin, and Haley; and a sister, Ida Lee Fay.
She was preceded in death by a daughter at birth, Karen Jo; and a brother, Irvin Robinson.
Violet retired from federal civil service at Fort Leavenworth in 1971, where she worked in the library at Bell Hall. After retirement she enjoyed oil painting, especially scenery and old barn pictures.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. after the visitation at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.Mary Arlene Carty
Mary Arlene Carty, beloved wife, mother, sister, and aunt, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. She was 64. Arlene was born Aug. 10, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of Stephen Michael and Anna Veronica (Strinic) Frenock, they preceded her in death.
She graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1965, and was commissioned in the United States Navy where she served for five years. She served on the hospital ship USS Repose as a Navy Nurse off the coast of Danang, Vietnam.
On May 26, 1971, she married John L. Carty in Clairton, Pa., he survives at the home. She is also survived by her children, Stephen Ryan Carty of Lansing, Sean Joseph Carty of New York, N.Y., and Anne Marie Carty of Toronto, Canada; her sister, Barbara Ann Parrett; her brothers, Stephen Michael Frenock, Jr., and Thomas Joseph Frenock; her aunt Emma Simkanich; her uncle, Edward Frenock; and many cousins.
Mary also earned a master’s degree in nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. For the last ten years she worked as a Home Health Care Nurse.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home, with Navy honors at the end of the visitation. Cremation will follow. Memorials are suggested to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.March 2008 Obituaries
Kenneth J. Fraser Jr.
Kenneth J. Fraser Jr., 54, of Rio Hondo, Texas died Monday, March 31, 2008, in an automobile accident near his home.
He was born Feb. 25, 1954, at Camp Atterbury, Ind., the son of Kenneth J. and Ruth E. (Huycke) Fraser. They survive in Leavenworth. He is also survived by two brothers, Michael (Cynthia) Fraser of Leavenworth, and William C. Fraser of Lawrence; a sister, Lisa Fraser of Leavenworth; his nieces and a nephew, Stephanie, Jeffrey and Ashley Fraser; and numerous cousins and aunts and uncles.
Kenneth graduated from Milton High School in Milton, Penn., in 1972, where he was selected as a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he received training in the medical field at Lackland Air Force Base. After discharge he worked in the same field at a hospital in San Antonio, Texas for several years before moving to Rio Hondo, Texas and continued work in a state hospital in that area.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2008, at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as Celebrant. Ret. U.S. Army Col. James Lester Moody
Ret. U.S. Army Col. James Lester Moody, 63, of Leavenworth, died Monday March 31, 2008, at Cushing Memorial Hospital. He was born July 1, 1944, in Bentonville, Ark., the son of Lester Thomas and Amna (Daily) Moody.
On Dec. 28, 1963, he married Alicia Fields in Bentonville, Ark., she survives at the home. He is also survived by two sons, James Marshall (April) Moody of Fayetteville, Ark., and Tom Lewis (Erika) Moody of Kansas City, Mo.; his grandchildren, Erin, Morgan, Adam, Allison, and Tate Moody; a sister, Jo Ella Kumpe.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dan Lewis Moody.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church. Nicolet “Nikki”E. Csizmazia de Somogy Bernard
Nicolet “Nikki”E. Csizmazia de Somogy Bernard, 57, of Lansing, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at St Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was born Aug. 28, 1950, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Nico E. and Victor Ann (Eisenring) Csizmazia de Somogy. They preceded her in death.
She graduated from Lansing High School in 1969, Kansas City Kansas Community College in 1992 with an Associates of Arts degree, and from Park College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in management.
On Aug. 29, 1981, she married Joseph E. Bernard. He survives at the home. She is also survived by a daughter, Kimberly Thomas-Marek and her husband Shawn Marek of Lansing; her stepchildren, Michael Bernard of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Jodi (Moses) Arroyo of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; her sisters, Ilka Wrigley of Leavenworth, Susan Carter of Kansas City, Mo., Viki Csizmazia de Somagy of Leavenworth, and Luci (Roger) Joyce of El Dorado, Kan.; her grandchildren, Chad and Olivia Marek, Haley and Manny Arroyo and Jason Bernard; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Nikki worked at Hallmark Cards, and then for the Department of the Army at Fort Leavenworth where she retired with 30 years of service as a Leadership Specialist for the Command and General Staff College.

Elizabeth Howard
Elizabeth Howard, 85, of Leavenworth, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Medicalodge of Leavenworth. She was born March 20, 1923, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Lee and Hattie Howard.
She is survived by her children, Eugene (Anna Belle) Howard of Leavenworth, and Donald “Fub” (Wilma) Howard of Liberty, Mo; her grandchildren, Rodney Howard, Marcus Howard, Tiffany Howard, Don C. Howard, Dustin Howard, Shaunte Childress, and Eugenie Howard; her siblings, Leo Howard and Evelyn Morgan; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth was a member of Independent Baptist Church where she frequently volunteered her time. She will be remembered as at “fan lady” at her church for passing out fans during the services. She also loved caring for the sick and infirmed.
Viewing will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Independent Baptist Church. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday following the viewing. Burial will follow at Mount Muncie Cemetery.Steven Murry Dickson
Steven Murry Dickson, 60, of Tucson, Ariz., died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his home in Tucson.
He was born Jan. 13, 1948, in Leavenworth, the son of Murry Monroe and Julia Josephine (Wood) Dickson. They preceded him in death.
He was baptized at the First United Methodist Church in 1961. Steve graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1966. After receiving a degree in Business Administration in 1971, from the College of Emporia in Emporia, Kan., Steve served as a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps, attending Officer Candidate School, Basic School and Ground Officer Supply School from 1973 to 1974. He was honorably discharged in 1975. After discharge Steve joined the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff and served in that capacity in 1976. During that same year and until his retirement in 2005, Steve was a Recreational Specialist and Senior Correctional Officer with the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons. He served at the Leavenworth Federal Prison and then at the Tucson Correctional Facility.
Steve loved baseball, fishing, skeet, and target shooting. He is survived by his sister, Donna G. Dickson of Overland Park, Kan.
A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Foundation (Little League Baseball)
Sharon Darlene Hill
Sharon Darlene Hill, 71, of Leavenworth, formerly of Muskogee, Okla., died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at the University Of Kansas Hospital.
She was born June 27, 1936, at Devils Lake, N.D., the daughter of Harry and Grace (Gordon) Gress.
Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, James “Mike” Hill on Jan. 12, 2004; and her sisters, Carol Kratochvil and Mae Hatten.
She is survived by her children, Duane (Kim) Pfleiger of Woodbury, Minn., Jackie (Danny) Roemer of Leavenworth, Cheryl (Kenny Cox) Hasche of Leavenworth, and Mark (Lori) Pfleiger of Prior Lake, Minn.; her precious grandchildren, Hillary (Tony) Garcia of Leavenworth, Christie (Chad) Brewer of Lamont, Penn, Heather Weidner of Burnsville, Minn., Michelle (Shane) Hamilton of Savage, Minn., Angie Pfleiger of Overland Park, Kan., Leah Pfleiger and Erica Pfleiger both of Prior Lake, Minn.; her great-grandchildren, Anthony Jr., Isabella, Henry, Charis, Chara, Caden, and Ellie Ann; her brothers, Don (Florence) Wallace of Metaline Falls, Wash., and Richard (Margie) Gress of Lynnwood, Wash.; her sisters, Beth Johnson of Big Sandy, Mont., and Ruth Terry of Malakoff, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
During her husbands 22 year Naval career Sharon was active in the Navy Ombudsman program, serving as the ombudsman for Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group 8, Norfolk VA and for Navy Recruiting District in Oklahoma City, Okla. Sharon was active in the Navy Wives Club and did volunteer duties at the Naval Dispensary at Norfolk, VA. After Mike’s retirement Sharon enjoyed being a homemaker and kept herself busy with the grandchildren whenever possible. She has been devoting her love and energy to her family and church

Kay Frances Beck, 66, of Leavenworth, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at St Luke’s Hospital.
She was born July 11, 1941, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Fred and Myrtle (Finneran) Hilscher. Kay graduated from Immaculata High School.
On May 6, 1961, she married Harold Francis Beck at Sacred Heart Church. He survives at the home. She is also survived by her children, Daniel S. and Christy Beck, Joanne M. Beck, Michael J. and Heather Beck, and James P. and Kelly A. Beck; her siblings, Lily Harris, Martha Harrington, and David Hilscher; her grandchildren, Sara E. Beck, Jeffrey M. Beck, Julie A. Beck, and Marcus Siolo; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

David “Mad Dog” L. Shanks, 69, of Lansing, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1938, in Weston, Mo., the son of Virgil and Merriam (Farmer) Shanks.
After graduation from high school Dave served in the Air National Guard. After discharge he married Judy Childs. He later married Mary McBroom.
Dave is survived by his children, Robert “Boomer” Shanks and Jenifer Mittelstaedt of Gardner, Kan.; a step-son Todd (Julie) McBroom of Lansing; two sisters, Margaret Bishop and Carol Schreifels; a brother, Ed “Buck” Shanks; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two siblings, Herman Shanks and Jackie Kirschbaum.
Dave worked in sales most of his life. He worked at Rusty Eck Ford for 13 years and was currently employed at Olathe Ford where he has worked for the past 18 years.
He enjoyed bowling and playing golf. He especially enjoyed spending time with two of his grandchildren, Cade and Kenna Mittelstaedt.
A memorial visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Willard Depue, 93, of Liberty, Mo., died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital. Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
William M. Fairhurst
William M. Fairhurst, 80, of Leavenworth, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Eisenhower VA Medical Center. Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Kurt W. Mierau
Kurt W. Mierau, 93, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Golden Living Nursing Center in Lansing. He was born Jan. 23, 1915, in Danzig, Germany the son of Max and Elise (Meissner) Mierau.
On March 29, 1940, he married Kathe Edith Brehmer in West Berlin, Germany. He served in the Luftwaffe during World War II. In 1960, he immigrated to the United States from West Berlin, Germany along with his wife and their children.
Kurt is survived by a daughter, Barbel and her husband Ronald Grey Jr., of Leavenworth; three grandchildren, Anette B.(Murry) Mitchel, Diana L. (Brian) Kraft, and Chance A. (Christina) Grey; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Dieter Detlef.
No services are scheduled, cremation is planned.

Josephine Gnip
Josephine Gnip, 98, formerly of Leavenworth, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, in Sellersburg, Ind.
She was born Aug. 16, 1909, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Anton and Mary (Zielinski) Kubicki.
On May 3, 1942, she married John P. Gnip in Leavenworth. He preceded her in death.
Josephine is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Thoeny of Clarksville, Ind.; a grandson, Michael and his wife Deborah Thoeny of Noblesville Ind.; and two great-grandsons, Brandon and Nicholas Thoeny.
She was a past member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Saint Casimir Catholic Church.

Roberta L. Noble
Roberta L. Noble, 63, of McLouth, Kan., passed away at her home on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born Oct. 21, 1944, in Ottawa, Kan., the daughter of Burt and Roxie Vogler
On June 19, 1964, she married Robert Noble. She leaves behind her husband of 43 years; two sons, Robert D. and Susan Noble of McLouth, and Brett D. Noble of Olathe, Kan.; one brother, Terry Vogler of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and many relatives and friends. She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to St. Luke’s Hospice of Leavenworth, for helping Roberta, her family and friends through this difficult time.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. after the visitation at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery in Springdale.
Henry D. Powell
Henry D. Powell, 81, of Leavenworth, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at the University Of Kansas Hospital.
He was born Nov. 10, 1926, in Clarkton, N.C., the son of James and Anna (Smith) Powell.
He served in the U.S. Army. Henry worked two full time jobs at, Kansas State Prison and Gould National Battery. He retired from both.
Henry is survived by, Trudy Powell, Ruth Lee, Marion, Carmen and Bobby; his siblings, Willie, Vivian, and Benjamin; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Cleo and Glenwood
A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb.27, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Bela Samuel Hamilton
Bela Samuel Hamilton, 79, of Leavenworth, died Monday, Feb.11, 2008, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Garrison, Kan., the son of Robert Waldo and Fay (Potter) Hamilton. Bela was preceded in death by his father, mother Fay Connelly and step-father, Bill Connelly
In 1946, he graduated from Immaculata High School. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in Korea. He also played minor league baseball for the Chicago Cubs. On April 23, 1948, he married Maxine Turpin, she preceded him in death. In 1956, Bela went to work at Armed Forces Insurance Company where he served as vice president until his retirement in 1992. He also attended Rockhurst College to further his education during his employment with Armed Forces. After retirement he continued to serve on the board of directors at Armed Forces.
On July 28, 1979, he married Mary Lou Butzin in Leavenworth and she survives at the home. He is also survived by his children, Cathy (Don) Thomas of Hinesville, Ga., Nancy Hamilton of Norcross, Ga., Carol (Gary) Hamilton of Belton, Mo., Barbara Ferrara of Leavenworth, Philip Hamilton of Chicago, Ill., Laura Drennon of Austin, Texas, and Linda (Roy) Robertson of Kansas City, Mo.; his siblings, Patrick (Mary) Connelly, Suzanne (Jim) Geharty, Michael (Glenda) Connelly, and Mary Beth Winslow; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bela enjoyed watching sports, he coached 8th grade CYO sports from 1957 to 1972. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Leavenworth Country Club, where he served on the board of directors. He was a member of the National Insurance Claims Council and the Elks club.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at St. Joseph Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm. as celebrant. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Immaculata High School.
LaRose K. Smith
LaRose K. Smith, 42, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
She was born March 3, 1965, at Cushing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth, to the proud parents, Lucious Smith and Joyce L. Berry-Gayden.
Kathy graduated from Spingarn Senior High School in Washington, D.C., in 1983.
She was well known at Spingarn High School and Howard University for her excellent Soprano voice in singing gospel music. She was voted most popular in her class at Spingarn High School. Kathy had a life-long friend, Dan Johnson, who was also the father of her only daughter, Keona Smith.
While living in Annapolis, Md., she attended the CNA program at Meridian Nursing Facility, where she received her nursing certificate and became a certified nursing assistant.
She later moved to Leavenworth and attended Kansas City Kansas Community College to continue her education.
Kathy was a dedicated member of Apostolic Deliverance Tabernacle, where her mother, Prophetess Joyce L. Berry-Gayden, is the pastor. Kathy loved to sing the praises of God.
When the ³Anointing² fell upon her, she would begin to sing in tongues. She was an adult Sunday school teacher and loved teaching Bible class. Kathy had a love for Bible history. She also served as church secretary and treasurer, church nurse and choir member for many years.
Kathy had a love for cooking and trying new recipes. She loved watching the cooking channel on television, also known as the ³Food Network.² Kathy and her sister, Eva, had the opportunity to sing at the White House in Washington, D.C., for former President Ronald Reagan during the Christmas celebration in 1982.
She also sang for former Mayor Marion Berry of Washington, D.C.
She is survived by her mother, Pastor Joyce L. Berry-Gayden; her daughter, Keona Smith; five sisters, Eva Preston, Angenette Smith, Daveen Smith, Gerenda Smith and Ammya Smith, all of Leavenworth; and her grandmother, Lucy Galbreath of Emporia, Kan. She is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Kathy was well loved by everyone.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lucious Smith.
Kathy will be greatly missed by family and friends. We know that God has chosen Kathy, this special ³La-Rose,² to be placed in His heavenly garden.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at the Pentecostal Church Apostolic Faith, 1701 Fifth Ave. in Leavenworth. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Bernice E. Brown
Bernice E. Brown, 95, of Leavenworth, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at Twin Oaks Assisted Living. She was born Feb. 24, 1912, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Joseph and Augusta (Gerkin) Wager.
In July of 1931, she married Charles Smith. He preceded her in death in 1941. In 1957, she married Archie Brown. He also preceded her in death.
Bernice is survived by her children, Greta Inkman of Leavenworth, and Joan (Gary) Poss of Wichita, Kan; her grandchildren, Darren (Toni) Inkman, Kimberly (Rodney) Hayes, Deborah Hare, Dr. Bradley (Connie) Poss, Dr. Lisa Hale and Kevin (Marcie) Poss; a brother, Robert E. (Irma) Wager; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, Bernice was preceded in death by four siblings, Clara Szczygiel, Joseph Wager Jr., Dr. Henry Paul Wager, and Mitzi Wager; and a son-in-law, Stanley Inkman.
Bernice worked for, B and G Hosiery, Leavenworth National Bank and Armed Forces Insurance where she retired from in 1978.
She was an avid Bridge player, she also enjoyed her friends and family.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the funeral home. Michael J. Waite
Michael J. Waite, 54, of Leavenworth, died Sunday, Feb.3, 2008, at the University of Kansas Hospital. He was born Oct. 1, 1953, at Fort Belvoir, Va., the son of Richard D. and H. Louise (Peace) Waite.
Michael graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelor’s degree in 1975. He was awarded his Juris Doctor degree from Washburn University School of Law in 1978. He was engaged in the private practice of law in Leavenworth following admission to the bar for 29 years. During his 29 years of practice he concentrated on criminal defense, appearing regularly before the District Courts of the State of Kansas as well as presenting cases before the Kansas Court of Appeals, the Kansas Supreme Court and The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Michael retired from private practice due to deteriorating health in 2007.
He was a past member of the, Kansas Bar Association (KBA); The Leavenworth County Bar Association; The Kansas Trial Lawyers Association (KTLA); and the Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (KACDA). He had been a member of the local contract panel of attorneys, appointed by Kansas District Court Judges to represent indigent criminal defendants charged with misdemeanors as well as minors charged with juvenile offenses and children who were found to be children in need of care. He represented adults charged with more serious felony offenses in state courts. He also was a court appointed defense attorney for Leavenworth Municipal Court for the past 10 years.
Michael was a key force in forming the Annual Leavenworth County Bar Association Golf Tournament. He was instrumental in establishing the tradition of giving the proceeds of this event to local charities. His efforts helped to produce a regular annual contribution to the local charities selected by the Leavenworth County Bar Association. The total financial contribution his efforts produced is incalculable. His participation will be missed by the members of the Bar Association and the charities his efforts assisted
.
He was the unofficial “Welcoming Committee” to new members of the Leavenworth Bar. Michael would take time to greet and welcome all new attorneys and would introduce them to other older more experienced members. He was kind, not only in court, but also warm and charming at social occasions. Michael was an outstanding member of the Bar in his personal interactions with those who needed his counsel and insight.
On May 28, 1977, he married Colleen E. Barry at Fort Leavenworth, she survives at the home. He is also survived by a son, Zachary D. (Paige) Waite of California; his mother and step-father, H. Louise and Richard Poweska of Oklahoma; his siblings, Susan M. (Stephen) Brown, Joyce A. (Scott) Schwertfager, and Steven A. Waite; his nieces, Jerrica Waite, Erin Waite, Sarah (Michael) Susalla, and Megan (Jay) Whay; and a great-Niece, Kayla Susalla.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Richard D. Waite; and a brother, Daniel Richard Waite.
Cremation is planned there will be no services. William C. “Bill” Pastore
William C. “Bill” Pastore, 75, of Leavenworth, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at the Eisenhower VA Medical Center. He was born Oct. 24, 1932, in New York, N.Y. the son of Henry and Mildred (Devepwerd) Pastore.
Bill attended Leavenworth schools and then served for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After discharge from the Navy, he worked for more than 10 years in California as a chef. In 1970 he returned to Leavenworth and went to work for Price Brothers in Bonner Springs. After he retired from Price Brothers he worked at the Leavenworth VA as a grounds keeper.
Bill is survived by his siblings, Donald (Dixie) Walkenbach of Leavenworth, Blanch Goodrow of Reno, Nev., Helen (Raymond) Boyd of Leavenworth, and Freddie (Billie) Walkenbach of Leavenworth; his nieces and nephews, Matthew Walkenbach, Bridgette Henry, Lt. Col. Raymond Boyd Jr., Brenda Nooner, Debbie Day, Donna Patroske, Kathy Wolters, and Robert Oertel; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Pastore and, Mildred Walkenbach; his step-father, Fritz Walkenbach; and a sister, Rita Hubbard.
Bill will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Lyle Edward Monsell, 86, of Leavenworth, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at Select Specialty Care at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 14, 1921, in Omaha Neb., the son of William and Ruth (Wilson) Monsell.
On Feb. 28, 1942, he married Helen Spindler in Papillion, Neb., she preceded him in death on April 7, 2006.
Lyle is survived by a daughter, Judy (Gary) Keller of Platte City, Mo.; a granddaughter, Stacey (Paul) Bequette of Lansing; three great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Taylor and Darian; and a sister, Lillian Sunclades.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, James, and Theodore,
Lyle was a 60 year member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers of America Local 168. He collected antiques for 40 years. Lyle was a member of First Christian Church.
A memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at the First Christian Church, 130 N. 6th Street, Leavenworth. There will be a reception after the service in the friendship room at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Dorothy E. Nelson, 87, of Leavenworth, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Country Care Nursing Home in Easton. She was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Oakland, Calif., the daughter of Frank and Mary (Swartz) Migalo.
Dorothy lived in Oakland most of her life. She was involved in the community and community development. She worked for the city of Oakland. After retirement she and her son Ron moved to Leavenworth.
She is survived by her children, Ronald Nelson Sr. of Leavenworth, Debbie (Rodler) Morris of Leavenworth, and Christine (Bill) Garvin of Apache Junction, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Ronald Nelson Jr., Cristopher Hawkins, Mari Hawkins, Kira Hawkins, and Brion Hawkins; and five great-grandchildren.
Dorothy loved old music and old musicals.

Elizabeth L. VanDruff, 77, formerly of Leavenworth, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at her home in rural Easton. She was born July 3, 1930, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Alvie and Viola (Lancaster) Darby.
On Dec. 31, 1954, she married Grover C. VanDruff Jr. he preceded her in death in 1990.
Elizabeth is survived by her children, Andrea (Clyde) Fields of Lansing, Billy Stewart of Leavenworth, Diane (Kevin) Last of Leavenworth, Russell (Jane) VanDruff of Leavenworth, Elizabeth (Dale) Fryman of Leavenworth, Donald (Kathy) VanDruff of Missouri, Brenda (John) Achord of Easton, Philip (Amanda) VanDruff of Leavenworth; 34 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Darby; one sister, Shirley Brewer; and a close friend and aunt, Lillian Shrader.
In addition to her husband, Elizabeth was preceded in death by two grandsons, Christopher Achord and Clyde E. Fields; her great-grandsons, Austin VanDruff, Jacob Simpson, and Mavrick Simpson.

SFC. John T. Hodge Sr. US Army, Ret.
SFC John Thomas Hodge Sr. US Army retired, 75, of Leavenworth, entered into rest Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008. He was born on Nov. 20, 1932, in Bean Station, Tenn., the son of Gid and Fannie (Spires) Hodge.
He entered the United States Army in 1951. He was a veteran of both the Korean (1951-1952) and Vietnam (1969-1970) wars. He also served in Germany from 1956 to 1960. He supervised the USDB car wash, farm, and also worked in various other sections of the prison at Ft. Leavenworth for 22 years. He was awarded many medals including; Army Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal (10LC) RVN Gall Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Merit United Commendation, RVN Camp Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Eight Good Conducts Medals, 2nd Korean Winter, Korea Summer-Fall 52, Vietnam Summer-Fall 69, Sanctuary Counteroff, Vietnam Counteroff PVII, Vietnam Spring 69. He retired in 1976 after serving for 26 ½ years. After retirement, he worked in civil service in the department of Entomology at Ft. Leavenworth until he retired again in 1996. He will be remembered for his service to his country, which he was extremely proud of.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans organizations.
While he was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, he met Ruth Marie Zobel at the old roller skating rink on Shawnee Street. They were married on April 11, 1953, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church.
His main hobby was working and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly, and will be greatly missed by them. He loved his family, Tennessee, mushroom hunting, fixing things and taking meticulous care of his home.
John was a member of the Riverview Missionary Baptist Church in Bean Station, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clyde; two nephews; and his mother and father in-law, John and Ruth Zobel.
John is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ruth; his daughters, Patricia (Randy) Asher of Leavenworth, and Brenda (Mark) Little of Leavenworth; his sons, John (Cindy) Hodge Jr. of Terre Haute, Ind., Mike Hodge of Leavenworth, and Darrell (Cindy) Hodge of Meridian, Idaho; his grandchildren, Jeffrey Asher, Megan (James) Vanek, Raechel Little, Dusty Little, Derek Hodge, Zachary Hodge, Sarah Sweet, Krissi (Greg) Dillion, John Hodge III., Brent Hodge, Kellen Hodge, Mike Hodge Jr., and Brittany Sweet; his great-grandchildren, Haylee, Jaden and Jillian Vanek, Callista and Carson Dillion, Brody Asher, Keagan O’Brien, and Joshua Hodge; his siblings, Dolice (Carolyn) Hodge, Marie Bibbins, and Grace Johnson, all of Bean Station, Tenn.; and several loved nieces and nephews.Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at the R.L. Printice “Lee” Bowen
Printice “Lee” Bowen, 63, of Leavenworth, died suddenly Friday, January 4, 2008, in Inez, Kentucky. He was born Nov. 8, 1944, in Martin County, Ky., the son of Chester and Lillian (Mullett) Bowen. They preceded him in death.
Lee served two tours of duty in Vietnam while serving in the U.S. Army. After discharge from the Army, he worked for the VA Police Department. After he retired from the VA Police Department he worked in security at Kansas City International Airport as manager of security.
On March 28, 1969, he married Anna Marie Ozorkiewicz in Leavenworth, she survives at the home. He is also survived by two daughters, Angela (Richie Merkel) Myers of Leavenworth and Barbie (Sam) Walker of Olathe; two grandchildren, Devan and Trenton; a sister Maxine (Buck Canterbury) Bowen of Kermit, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 pm Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan 10, at the funeral home, with Chaplain Craig Scheidecker presiding. Burial with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.Ruth May Whitaker
Ruth May Whitaker, 94, of Leavenworth, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at Homestead Assisted Living in Leavenworth. She was born May 3, 1913, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Ira and Olga (Lange) Leffler.
On December 28, 1932, she married Russ Whitaker in Kansas City, Mo., he survives at Homestead Assisted Living. They celebrated 75 years of marriage last Friday. She is also survived by a son, Reed and wife Susan Whitaker Jr. of Overland Park, Kan.; two grandchildren, Russell R. “Trey” Whitaker and Courtney Whitaker.
Ruth was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Ohde; and two brothers, Del Leffler and Kermit Leffler.
She was a great supporter of Leavenworth. Ruth also supported her husband in many civic, historical, and cultural endeavors he undertook promoting Leavenworth. She was co-owner of Barlow Cigar Company. Ruth was a 50 year member of First United Methodist Church. She was an avid collector of antiques.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday following the visitation at the funeral home.
