Richard R. Garnett II, 43, of Leavenworth, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at North Care Hospice. He was born Dec. 30, 1968, in Leavenworth, the son of Richard R. and Patricia (Woodward) Garnett.
He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1987. He worked at McDonalds and then at Little Caesars Pizza where he met his wife Bernice. They were married May 18, 1990, in Kansas City, Kan. They adopted their daughter in 1998. Rich decided he wanted to be part of his wife’s religion, so after attending RCIA classes Richard was baptized, confirmed, received Holy Communion and renewed their wedding vows in the Catholic Church on Feb. 2, 2002. He was a third degree Knight of Columbus.
Richard worked many jobs in his life before losing his sight in 2008. His favorite job was caring for his grandson Michael, who was the love of his life.
He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, Donald and Birdie Humphreys, Walter Woodward and Ruth Blowers.
Richard is survived by his wife; his mother; his brother, Donald (Denise) Garnett; his daughter, Melissa A. Garnett of Kansas City, Kan; his grandchildren, Michael Garnett of Lansing and Joseph Beck of Kansas City, Kan; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Immaculate Conception Church or the American Cancer Society.
