Eugene V. “Gene” Duffin, 89, of Leavenworth, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at his home. He was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Leavenworth, the son of Daniel O. and Bertha V. (Beyer) Duffin.
Gene graduated from Immaculata High School in 1940. After graduation he served in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a navigator. He earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He worked for the U.S. Postal service for 34 years and retired in 1979 as a rural mail carrier.
On April 27, 1946, he married Marie Antoinette Zeugin at Sacred Heart Church in Leavenworth. She preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2001. He was also preceded in death by five siblings, Daniel Duffin, Loretta Bergman, Ralph Duffin, Bob Duffin and Mary Ann Willcott.
Gene is survived by his children, Jeanne (Bernard) Hund of Leavenworth, Jim (Karen) Duffin of Independence, Mo., Eileen (Michael) Willcott of Leavenworth, Sallie (Donald) McGlinn of Topeka and Andy (Christine) Duffin of Lees Summit, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; like a son, nephew Daniel Duffin; and a large extended family including nieces, nephews, cousins and his sisters-in-law.
He was a life-time member of Sacred Heart Church, the Eagles and Knights of Columbus. He and Antoinette enjoyed square dancing, traveling and family gatherings.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Church or Leavenworth Catholic Schools.
